1N4742A Diode Explained / Description
1N4742A identical to 1N4742 is a DO-41 package zener diode. It is a diode of 1N474x series which is a series of zener diodes and there are several other voltage zener diodes such as 3.3V, 5.1V, 6.0V
A, zener diode is designed to use in voltage regulation tasks in electronic circuit. It uses a resistor in the series (which is very important to use) it limits the current flows through the zener diode. Moreover unlike other rectifier diodes for example 1N4148, 1N4007 etc in which current flows from anode to cathode but in zener diode the current flows from cathode to anode or in reverse direction which makes zener diode capable to perform voltage regulation.
It can drive maximum load of 500mA but you can also drive more current by using a high current transistor and the total power dissipation of the transistor is 1000mW. The maximum storage temperature and operating temperature of the diode is from -65°C to +200°C, the max 200°C temperature survival capability makes it ideal to use in variety of applications which require high temperature survival components.
