1N5402 Diode Explained / Description
1N540X is a series of high current diodes available in DO-201 package. 1N5402 is one of the diode of this series which we are discussing here. All the other diodes in the series are almost same and can be used alternatively the only difference them that is important to consider is their “peak repetitive reverse voltage” which defines the maximum load capability of the diode.
The 1N5402 has the peak repetitive reverse voltage of 200V which means that it is capable to drive load of upto 200V (But we can only drive load of upto 160V because 200V is its absolute maximum value and it is not recommended to use any component to its absolute maximum ratings). One important thing to keep in mind is that we can only replace it with its higher number when it comes to using the other diode of this series as a replacement because the higher number has more peak repetitive reverse voltage and the lower number have less peak repetitive reverse voltage but in some conditions, we can also replace it with 1N5401 for example if your load requirement is under 100V.
The diode possesses quite good characteristics and features such as low forward voltage drop, more surge current, low leakage, average rectified output current is upto 3.0A etc.
Where We Can Use It
1N5402 can be used in various applications such as rectification, inverter, power supplies, voltage spikes protection other protections in circuits, etc.
Applications
Battery Chargers
Protection Purposes
Adapters
Power Supplies
Low to high voltage rectification
AC to DC converters
Step up and step down converters
Blocking voltage and current in any desired direction
Safe Operating Guidelines / Absolute Maximum Ratings
To safely operate the transistor it is recommended not to use it on its absolute maximum ratings. The maximum peak repetitive voltage of the transistor is 200V therefore do not drive a load of more than 160V, the maximum average rectified forward current is 3A so the driven load should be under 2.4A and the storage and operating temperature should be between -65°C to150°C.
