1N5817 Diode Explained / Description
1N5817 is a schottky diode available in DO-41 package. Before discussing about the 1N5817 diode we will understand the difference between rectifier diodes and schottky diodes to better understand the schottky diodes and it will also make it easier for you to understand 1N5817 or any other Schottky diode in more depth.
Schottky Diodes VS Rectifier Diodes
Schottky diodes are very different from the inside when compare to the rectifier diodes, the Schottky diode junction is between an n-type semiconductor and a metal plate, as opposed to a rectifier diode whereas the rectifier diodes are simplest p-n junction diodes. The rectifier diodes are capable to deliver high peak repetitive voltage which makes it ideal to use in half and full bridge rectifier circuits, but the schottky diodes has low peak repetitive voltage which makes it unsuitable to use in diode bridge circuits. As far as switching speeds are concerned, Schottky diodes outperform rectifier diodes. This fast switching speed makes it ideal to use in high-frequency applications, radio frequency applications, inverter circuits etc., but the rectifier diodes cannot be used in these applications and if used it will provide very poor results.
Moreover, schottky diodes are high-efficiency diodes that provide low power loss and high efficiency as compared to the rectifier diode. The low power loss feature of schottky diodes makes it ideal to use in low power and battery-operated circuits. For example, if you are using a rectifier diode in a 3V circuit then half of the voltage will be dropped after passing through the rectifier diode and you will get very low voltage at the diode’s output. But this problem can be easily overcome with the schottky diode because of its low voltage drop capabilities.
Now, we come to the part where we were discussing about 1n5817 diode. The maximum output current of the diode is 1A and the maximum load voltage it is capable to drive is 20V. The maximum RMS reverse voltage is 14V and the diode has low voltage drop and is capable of high current output. The diode also has a fast recovery time.
Where We Can Use It
1N5817 diode can be used for variety of requirements such as have fast switching requirements like in voltage boosters circuits, buck converter circuits, RF detector circuits, solar charger,s and other variety of solar applications, voltage blocking applications. It can also be used as a replacement for a rectifier diode that has the same ouput current as the 1N5817 has but it cannot be used as a replacement for high voltage applications. Because it is capable to deliver the maximum output voltage of 20V.
Applications
Power Supplies
Battery Chargers
Voltage Doublers
Low voltage Rectification

Blocking incoming voltage where not required
Safe Operating Guidelines / Absolute Maximum Ratings
For safe operations do not drive load of more than 1A and the load voltage should be under 20V. Connect in the right polarity and check the polarity before using in the circuit and always store or operate this device at temperature above -65 °C and below +125 °C.
