2N6388 Transistor Explained / Description:
2N6388 is an NPN darlington transistor available in TO-220 package. This transistor is a member of a series which also contains other transistors such as 2N6386 and 2N6387. All these transistors are almost identical with each other according to their characteristics but the only difference is their collector-base and collector-emitter voltage but if you are using it in circuits that requires below 40V then you can easily use them alternatively.
Looking at the absolute max ratings of the transistor the collector-emitter voltage is 80V, collector current is 8A, collector-base voltage is also 80V, emitter-base voltage is 5V, base current is 0.25A DC, collector power dissipation is 65W, junction temperature is 150°C and storage temperature is from -65°C to 150°C.
These transistor are designed to be used in general purpose switching and amplifier applications. A good thing about these transistor series are that their PNP complimentary transistor are also available.
As regarding to the applications of the transistor as mentioned above these transistor can be used in wide variety of applications.
How to Use This Transistor:
2N6388 can be used as a switch or amplifier. To use it as a switch connect its emitter with the negative rail of the circuit, apply signal to its base through a suitable current limiting resistor and connect load between collector and positive rail of the circuit.
To use it as a simple amplifier connect its emitter pin with the negative rail of the circuit. Apply signal to its base through any electrolytic capacitor from 1uF to 10uF value and connect the speaker between collector and the positive rail of the circuit.
Applications:
LED Drivers
DC to DC Converters
Motor Control
DC to DC Converters
Audio Amplifiers
Pulse Generator
Switching Circuits
Voltage inverters
Voltage Regulation
Battery Operated Applications
Safe Operating Guidelines:
Operating guidelines of the transistor are as follows.
- For good and long term performance always use it atleast 20% below from its absolute max ratings.
- So according to the above guide the maximum collector-emitter voltage is 80V but we will only use 64V.
- The maximum collector current is 10A but we will not drive load of more than 8A.
- Always check pinout before using in the circuit.
- Do not expose the transistor at temperatures below -65°C and above 150°C.
