2N6488 Transistor Explained / Description:

2N6488 is a general purpose transistor comes in TO-220 package. It is a transistor of a series that also contains other transistors such as 2N6486 and 2N6487. These transistors also have their complimentary transistors which are 2N6489, 2N6490, and 2N6491. All these transistors are designed to be used in wide variety of amplification and medium power switching applications.

Pin configuration of the transistor are as follows: the first pin is base, second pin is collector and the third pin is emitter.

Looking at the absolute maximum ratings of the transistor the collector-emitter voltage of the transistor is 80V, collector current is 15A, collector-base voltage is 90V, emitter-base voltage is 5V, base current is 5A, total power dissipation is 75W and storage, operating and junction temperature is -65°C to 150°C.

Where and How to Use This Transistor:

The transistor can be used as a switch and amplifier. For using the transistor as a switch apply signal to its base through a current limiting resistor. Connect emitter pin with the negative rail of the circuit and connect the load between the connector and the positive rail of the circuit.

To use it as a simple amplifier apply signal which you want to amplify on its base pin through a suitable electrolytic capacitor. Connect the emitter pin with the negative rail of the circuit and the speaker will be connected between the collector and the positive supply of the circuit. This is a simple amplifier circuit mostly found at the output of door bells, musical toys etc.

Applications:

Switching applications

Audio Amps Driver Stages

Audio Amplifiers

Motor Driver Circuits

Power Supply Circuits

Variety of General Other Purpose Applications

Safe Operating Guidelines:

Follow these guidelines to safely operate the transistor:

  • To safely operating the transistor it is suggested that always operate the transistor at least 20% below from its absolute maximum ratings.
  • So the maximum collector-emitter voltage is 80V but by following the above rule we will stay under 64V.
  • The maximum collector current is 15A but we will not drive load of more than 12A.
  • The operating and storage temperature should be between -65°C to 150°C.
