IRLB4132 MOSFET Explained / Description:
IRLB4132 is an N Channel MOSFET available in TO-220AB package. It is a quite interesting and useful transistor and has many features, and it also has many benefits when using it in electronic design or circuits.
The MOSFET is primarily designed for Uninterruptable power supplies/Inverter circuits and low voltage power tools but it can be used in a wide variety of other applications which we will discuss later in this post.
The MOSFET also has many features and benefits which are as follows:
Very Low RDS(on)
The MOSFET features very low RDS(on) means its drain to source resistance is less due to which less heat is dissipated when the transistor is in an active state.
100% Avalanche Tested
The 100% avalanche tested feature ensures that it can provide stable performance and withstand when its drain to source voltage is above from the max limit.
Low Gate Drive Requirements
The transistor has low gate drive requirements due to which it can easily be operated from low voltage and battery operated devices and its maximum gate threshold voltage is only 2.35 which ensures that the MOSFET will become completely active when the voltage on its gate will be 2.35 and will be able to drive load of upto 150A. But it is suggested to read the safety operating guidelines before driving load from the MOSFET. These guidelines can be found under the “Safe Operating Guidelines / Absolute Maximum Ratings” topic below. So due to its low gate voltage threshold this MOSFET is ideal to use directly drive a load from ICs and electronic platforms such as Arduino and Raspberry Pi.
High Continuous Drain Current
The transistor also has a high continuous drain current of max 150A from which you can drive high power loads from a single transistor with minimum gate voltage.
High Storage and Junction Temperature
The transistor also has high storage and junction temperature which ensures to perform stable and delivers more power as compared to other low-temperature MOSFETs.
Where We Can Use It & How to Use:
As already mentioned above the MOSFET is primarily designed for uninterruptible power supplies and low voltage power tools but it is not limited to these uses and can also be used in variety of applications such as automotive applications, motor drivers, solar etc.
Applications:
Uninterruptible Power Supplies
Power Supplies
Solar Chargers
Battery Charger Circuits
Battery Management Systems Circuits
Inverter Circuits
Safe Operating Guidelines / Absolute Maximum Ratings:
To get long term and stable performance the following guidelines should be followed.
Do not drive MOSFET on its absolute maximum ratings and always stay 20% below. The maximum drain to source voltage is 30V therefore do not drive load of more than 24V. The maximum continuous drain current is 150A so do not drive load of more than 130A. Use a suitable heatsink with the transistor and always store or operate at temperature above -55°C and below +175°C.
