2N4123 Transistor Explained / Description:

2N4123 is quite an interesting general purpose small signal transistor that has all the features to use in a variety of general applications that fall under its ratings. The transistor is NPN type and available in TO-92 package. The maximum collector to emitter voltage of the transistor is 30V, max collector to base voltage is 40V, max collector current (continuous) is 200mA, DC current gain is 25 to 150, the noise figure is 6.0 dB, max transition frequency is 250MHz and max power dissipation is 625mW.

The transistor is almost identical to the popular 2N3904 so you can replace it in most of the applications where 2N3904 can be used. Moreover, it can also be used in the place of other similar general purpose transistors like 2N3904.

2N4123 can be used in variety of applications such as switching and amplification. When used as a switch it is capable to drive load of upto 200mA which is its absolute maximum continuous collector current rating but the manufacturer does not recommend driving a transistor to its absolute maximum rating so we will stay under 150mA to 160mA. Other than a switch it can also be used as an amplifier in a variety of applications to amplify audio and other signals in circuits.

There is also another transistor in the series which is almost identical to 2N4123 which is 2N4124 and you can replace it in any application.

Where We Can Use it & How to Use:

2N4123 can be used in many small signal general purpose applications as a switch or amplifier. It can be used to drive relays, LEDs, high power transistors, ICs etc. Moreover it can also be used as an amplifier in many applications. The max transition frequency of the transistor is 250MHz due to which it can also be used in radio frequency applications under 250MHz.

Applications:

Radio and RF Applications under 250MHz

Audio preamplifiers

Audio amplifiers

Switching loads under 200mA

Safe Operating Guidelines / Absolute Maximum Ratings:

Follow the below safe operating guidelines when using this transistor in your circuit or design.

  • As mentioned before do not use the transistor to its absolute maximum ratings. Using the transistor to its absolute maximum ratings may damage it or weakens its performance. Therefore use it at least 20% below from its absolute max ratings.
  • The max continuous collector current is 200mA therefore do not drive load of more than 160mA.
  • The max collector to emitter voltage is 30V therefore do not drive load of more than 24V.
  • Do not store or operate the transistor at temperatures below -55°C and above +150 °C.
