C6093 Transistor Explained / Description

C6093 or 2SC6093 is a high voltage NPN power transistor designed to use in high voltage color displays for example in televisions and monitors. It is used in their horizontal deflection circuit to control the movement of electron beam which is essential for color images to display on the screen, the circuit that is used to perform this function requires high voltage to perform smoothly. So the C6093 is specially designed to use in this application to ensure better high voltage handling.

For using in above application the manufacturer added some good features which are

Built in damper diode: mean it has a diode inside which is a damper diode which is a good candidate for the protection of voltage spikes.

100% avalanche tested: Another feature is which means it is 100% tested for high voltage handling without being damaged.

Minimum Lot to Lot variations: Not only in transistors but also in other electronic components there are some slight variations between different lots due to which sometimes we experience that the same part number purchased with the same manufacturer has a slightly different performance this is because there is always some slightly lot to lot variations in components so the “Minimum lot to lot variations” means the manufacturer has taken steps in the manufacturing process to ensure minimum lot to lot variations and all C6093 whether it is from the different lot will provide the same performance.

Low saturation voltage: When a transistor is used as a switch and it is in fully or totally ON state, it is a state when the maximum (of which the transistor is capable of) current and voltage are passing through its collector-emitter at that time the low minimum voltage drop across it is called low saturation voltage. So the transistor with low saturation voltage will provide an overall better performance with good power efficiency and also ensures low power dissipation.

Looking at the absolute maximum ratings and other important characteristics of the transistor the maximum continuous collector current is 5A, max collector-emitter voltage is 800V, max collector-base voltage is 1500V, max base current is 2A, max emitter base voltage is 5V, minimum to maximum DC current gain is 5.3 to 10, collector-emitter saturation voltage is 0.1V to 0.3V to 2.0V and max power dissipation is 25 Watts.

Where We Can Use it & How to Use

The transistor is designed to use in high voltage color displays of televisions and monitors but it is not limited to only this use and due to its good ratings and characteristics it can be used in wide variety of applications. The detailed list of its applications can be found under applications heading below.

Applications

High voltage color displays of televisions and monitors

Inverter circuits

Switching circuits

Electronic Ballasts

Power Amplifiers

Motor Control

And many other high voltage applications

Safe Operating Guidelines

To operate the transistor safely always stay 20% below from its absolute maximum ratings the maximum collector current is 5A therefore do not drive load of more than 4A, the maximum collector-emitter voltage is 800V therefore do not drive load of more than 640V and always store or operate at temperatures above -55°C and below +150 °C.
