C3198 Transistor Explained / Description
C3198 is a TO-92 package NPN transistor designed to use for switching and audio frequency amplifications and also for low noise amplifiers. The transistor has many features such as:
A Low Noise Transistor: The transistor is having low noise capabilities due to which it will perform better in amplification of a signal by reducing extra noise.
It Has Excellent hFE Linearity: This means that it will maintain consistent current gain in different conditions of operations which ensures good signal amplification.
It Has Minimum Lot to Lot Variations: There are always some variations in between different lots of the same part number transistor with same manufacturers. The minimum lot to lot variations means that the manufacturer has taken steps in the manufacturing of this transistor to reduce lot to lot variations means all the transistor of different lots will perform the same.
A High DC Current Gain Transistor:
It has a gain of 70 to 700 which makes it ideal to use in circuits where a high gain transistor is needed for example in an audio pre-amplifier where we need to amplify a very small signal before processing in a circuit. Together with its low noise capability this transistor is capable to amplify small, low gain or faint signals of any kind to a good gain signal with noise reduction.
Excellent Safe Operating Area: Means that the transistor has excellent capability to handle stress when it is used to its limit and cannot easily get damaged. This makes the transistor reliable to use in your applications.
Now looking at the ratings and characteristics of the transistor the maximum collector-base voltage is 60V, max collector-emitter voltage is 50V, max emitter-base voltage is 5V, max collector current is 150mA and max collector power dissipation is 400mW. The noise figure of the transistor is 10dB, collector output capacitance is 3.0pF, minimum to maximum DC current gain is 70 to 700 and transition frequency is 80MHz.
According to its hFE classification the transistor is available in four different hFE values which can be determined with the letters written on the transistor after the part number. So if that letter is “O” then its hFE will be 70 to 140, if “Y” then its hFE will be 124-400, if “GR” then the hFE will be 200 to 400 and if the alphabets are “BL” then its hFE will be 350 to 700.
Where We Can Use it & How to Use
This transistor has many uses such as it can be used for audio amplifications, pre-amplifications, signal amplifications, switching etc. The detailed list of its applications can be found below under applications heading. The using procedure of this transistor is same as we use any other BJT transistor.
Applications
Switching circuits
Audio Amplifier Circuits
Audio Preamplifier Circuits
Low Level Signal Amplification
RF Circuits around 100MHz
Safe Operating Guidelines
To get long term performance it is important to follow the safety guidelines. First of all it is important to keep in mind that do not use any transistor to its absolute maximum ratings and stay 20% below from its maximum ratings so same applied to this transistor. The maximum collector-emitter voltage is 50V therefore do not drive load of more than 40V, maximum collector current is 150mA, so the driven load should be under 120mA. Use a suitable base resistor and always store or operate at temperatures above -55°C and below +125 °C.
