BD244 /A/B/C Transistor Explained / Description:
BD244 transistor and its variations which are BD244, BD244A, BD244B, BD244C are medium power PNP transistor available in TO-220 package. These transistors are designed to be used in switching and amplifier applications and are available in four different variations, each variation has a different collector-emitter, collector-base, and collector-emitter sustaining voltage.
the absolute maximum ratings of the transistor are as follows:
The maximum collector current is -6A, max collector-emitter voltage of BD244 is -45V, BD244A is -60V, BD244B is -80 and BD244C is -100V. Same as the maximum collector-base voltage of BD244 is -45V, BD244A is -60V, BD244B is -80 and BD244C is -100V. Max emitter-base voltage is 5V, max collector dissipation is 65 Watt, max junction temperature is 150 °C and max storage temperature is from -65 °C to 150 °C.
BD244 and its variations are designed to be used in switching and amplifier applications and all these variations can be used alternatively in applications that require voltage below -45V, but if your load requires more than that then you should select the one that suits your requirements.
Where We Can Use it & How to Use:
BD244 and its variations are general purpose devices designed to be used in switching and amplifier applications. Moreover, it is a BJT transistor so using procedure of the transistor is same as we use any other BJT transistor by providing a signal to its base, connecting its emitter with the positive supply, and driving load through its collector.
Applications:
Battery Chargers
BMS Applications
High Power Audio Amplifier Circuits
Driving or Switching Loads under 6A
Motor Drivers
Safe Operating Guidelines:
Here are the safe operating guidelines for the transistor.
- Always use the transistor 20% below from its absolute maximum ratings.
- So according to the above 20% rule, the maximum collector current is -6A but we will not drive load of more than 4.8A.
- Same as the maximum collector-emitter voltage of BD244 is -45V but we will not use more than 36V. The Max voltage of BD244A is 60V, but we will use a max 48V, BD244B is 80V but we will only 64V, and BD244C has max voltage of -100V, but we will only use 80V.
- A proper heatsink should always be used with the transistor.
- The pin layout should be checked before using it in the circuit.
- Always store or operate the transistor at temperatures above -65°C and below 150°C.
