BCY59 Transistor Explained / Description:

BCY59 is an NPN metal case transistor available in TO-18 package. It is designed to be used in switch and amplification applications. Looking at the absolute maximum ratings of the transistor collector-emitter voltage is 45V, collector-base voltage is also 45V, collector current is 100mA (some manufacturers also making it with 200mA collector current). Emitter-base voltage is 7V, total power dissipation is 1W, storage and operating temperature is -65 °C to +150 °C and junction temperature of 200 °C.

BCY59 is a transistor of a series which also contains one other transistor that is BCY58. There are many variations of these transistors are available which are BCY59-7, BCY59-7, BCY59-7, BCY59-7 and BCY58-7, BCY58-7, BCY58-7, BCY58-7. The DC current gain of all the variations are also different. Such as at 10mA the BCY58-7 and BCY59-7 DC current gain is from 80 to 250, BCY58-8 and BCY59-8 DC current gain is from 120 to 400, BCY58-9 and BCY59-9 DC current gain is from 160 to 630 and BCY58-10 and BCY59-10 DC current gain is from 240 to 1000.

The PNP complementary transistor of both NPN transistors are also available which are BCY78 and BCY79.

As mentioned before these transistor are designed to be used in switching and amplifier applications but it is not limited to these uses and can also be used in other applications such as low noise and high gain applications, RF applications etc. the detailed list of its applications can be found below under the “Applications” heading.

How to Use Transistor:

Here is a simple guide on how to use transistor:

To use it as a switch connect its emitter pin with the negative rail of the circuit apply signals from which you want to control the output load to its base pin through a suitable current limiting resistor and connect the load between the collector pin and the positive rail of the circuit.

To use it as an amplifier provide signals that you want to amplify to its base through a suitable electrolytic capacitor normally 1uF to 10uF capacitor is used connect its emitter pin with the negative rail of the circuit and drive the speaker with the collector and use an electrolytic capacitor of same value as you use before between the collector and speaker pin and the other wire of the speaker will be connected with the positive rail of the circuit.

Applications:

Switching Circuits

Battery Charger Circuits

Automotive Circuits

Tx and Rx Circuits

Audio Amplifier Stages

Darlington Pairs

Audio Preamplifier Circuits

Audio Amplifier Circuits

Signal Amplification

Safe Operating Guidelines:

For safe operating the transistor first of all do not use the transistor to its absolute maximum ratings and use at least 20% below from these ratings. So the maximum collector-emitter voltage is 45V but we will not use more than 36V, the maximum collector current is 100mA but we will drive load under 80mA. Check pin layout before using it in your circuit and always use a suitable heatsink with the transistor. The maximum storage and operating limiting are from -55°C to 150°C.
