2SC3280 Transistor Explained / Description:
2SC3280 is a TO-3PL package NPN power transistor. The transistor is actually designed to be used in power amplifier applications but can also be used in other applications such as switching etc.
Looking at the pin configuration the first pin (Pin1) is Base, second pin (Pin2) is Collector and the third pin (Pin3) is Emitter. The collector pin is also connected with the heatsink plate of the transistor to which you can mount a heatink with the help of a screw.
The absolute maximum ratings of the transistor are collector-emitter voltage is 160V, emitter-base voltage is 5V, collector-base voltage is 160V, collector current is 12A, collector dissipation is 120W and storage and junction temperature is -55°C to +150 °C.
Looking at some characteristics of the transistor the typical transition frequency is 30MHz, DC current gain is 35 to 160 and collector-emitter saturation 2.5V. The transistor is available in two different hFE classifications that can be determined with the help of the alphabet written after the part number. If that alphabet is “R” then its hFE value will be 55 to 110 and if that alphabet is “O” then its hFE value will be 80 to 160.
How to Use Transistor:
2SC3280 can be used as a switch and amplifier in many different types of applications. As it is a BJT transistor so the using procedure will be same as we use any other BJT transistor.

Safe Operating Guidelines:
For safe operating do not operate the transistor to its absolute maximum ratings and always stay 20% below from its absolute maximum ratings. Therefore the maximum collector current is 12A but according to the 20% below usage guidelines we will not drive load of more than 9.6A which is the 80% of its total capability. Same applied for its collector-emitter voltage, the maximum collector-emitter voltage is 160V but we will not drive load of more than 128V which is its 80%. Always use a heatsink with the transistor and store or operate it at temperature above -55°C and below +150 °C.
