A940 Transistor Explained / Description
A940 is a TO-220 packaged PNP BJT transistor. This transistor is designed for general purpose amplification and vertical output circuitry but it is not limited to these uses and can be used for wide variety of general purpose applications. It is also possesses fast switching feature that makes it ideal to use in applications where fast switching is crucial. When used as a switch it can drive max load of -1.5A and the max load voltage can be upto -150V. The max collector dissipation of the transistor is 25 Watts and the minimum and maximum DC current gain this transistor can provide is from 40 to 140.
Where We Can Use it & How to Use
As described above A940 is mainly designed to build vertical output circuitry and general purpose audio amplification purposes but not limited to these applications and can be used for wide variety of other purposes. It can also be used as a switch and can be used to drive wide variety of loads under -1.5A such as high power transistors, high power LEDs, Relays, ICs and part of circuit etc, its general purpose audio amplification applications can be audio amplifiers and high power audio amplifier stages.
Applications
Audio Amplifiers
Vertical Output Circuitry
Switching Loads under -1.5A
Darlington Pair
Many general purpose applications
How to Get Long Term Performance in a Circuit
For long life performance it is suggested to not use a component to its absolute maximum ratings and always use it 20% below from its absolute maximum ratings and same applies to the A940 transistor, the max collector current of the transistor is -1.5A therefore do not drive load of more than 1.2A. The max collector to emitter voltage is -150V therefore do not drive load of more than -120V. Use a suitable heatsink with the transistor and always store or operate it in temperature above -55 degree centigrade and below +150 degree centigrade.
