BC177 Transistor Explained / Description:

BC177 is a transistor of the widely used PNP transistor of BC17x series, the other transistors in this series are BC178 and BC179. The NPN complimentary series of these transistors is BC10x in which there are also three NPN transistors that are BC107, BC108 and BC109. All these transistors are very popular and used in variety of applications.

BC177 is the PNP complimentary of BC107. BC177 is designed for general purpose usage for example general purpose switching and amplification tasks under its limits.

The maximum collector current of the BC177 transistor is -100mA. The maximum collector emitter voltage is -45V and the maximum collector consumption is 300mW. It has a very good DC current gain property which is 200 to 800 and it also has low noise capability and maximum noise packer is 10dB which is quite interesting.

The transistor is available in three different versions according to the DC current gain values which can be determined by the last alphabet after its part number. If that alphabet is “A” then its gain value will be 125 to 260 and it that alphabet is “B” then the gain value will be 240 to 500.

Where We Can Use it & How to Use:

As mentioned above BC177 is a general purpose PNP transistor therefore it can be used in variety of general purpose switching and amplifications purposes that falls under its specifications. As a switch it can be used to drive load of upto 100mA and as an amplifier it can be used in variety of low power audio amplifiers, audio amplifier stages and preamplifiers. In addition, the transistor has very good noise figure and DC current gain, so it can be used to amplify a variety of small signals with noise reduction.

Other than that it can also be used in the RF applications of up to 100MHz.

Applications:

Audio amplifier Circuits

Audio Preamplifier Circuits

Small Signal Amplification

Darlington pairs

Radio Frequency Applications

Switching loads under 100mA

Safe Operating Guidelines / Absolute Maximum Ratings:

For safe operation we recommend to always use this transistor 20% below from its absolute maximum ratings. The maximum collector current is 100mA therefore do not drive load of more than 80mA. The maximum collector to emitter voltage is -45V so do not drive load of more than -36V. Use a suitable heatsink with the transistor. The collector of the transistor is also connected with the case so isolate the case and heatsink with the circuit connections and always store and operate it at temperature above -65 °C and below 150°C.
