BF420 Transistor Explained / Description

Are you looking for a high voltage and small current BJT transistor then you might take look at BF420 transistor. It is an NPN transistor available in TO-92 package. The transistor has some good features such as it has collector-emitter voltage of upto 300V, this high collector-emitter voltage makes it ideal to use it in high voltage circuits. It also has low feedback capacitance feature which ensures enhanced performance of the transistor and the circuit in which it is used.

Looking at the maximum ratings of the transistor the maximum collector-emitter voltage is 300V, max collector-base voltage is also 300V, max emitter-base voltage is 5V, max collector current is 50mA, max transition frequency is 60MHz and maximum power dissipation is 830mW.

The transistor is designed to use in the video output circuitry of TV and monitors. But it is not limited to these uses and can be used in variety of other applications such as switching, oscillation, voltage regulation and signal processing etc. The detailed list of its applications is mentioned under the Applications heading below.

Where We Can Use it & How to Use

As already discussed above the transistor is designed to use in Class-B video output circuits of color TVs and also in monitors. But it is not limited to these uses and can be used in variety of other applications such as high voltage circuits, different types of amplification and switching circuits.

Using procedure of this transistor is same as we use any other BJT transistors by supplying negative voltage at its emitter, connecting load to its collector and using a suitable base resistors to provide required current at its base to control the output.

Applications

Class B Video Output Stages of TV and Monitors

Switching Circuits

Oscillators

Signal Processing Circuits

And many other general purpose and high voltage applications

Safe Operating Guidelines

The safely use the transistor it is important to not use the transistor on its absolute maximum ratings and stay 20% below. Therefore the maximum collector-emitter voltage is 300V so do not drive load of more than 240V, the maximum collector current of the transistor is 50mA therefore do not drive the load of more than 40mA and always store or operate the transistor at temperature above -65°C and below +150 °C.
