MJE15028 Transistor Explained / Description:
MJE15028 is an NPN power bipolar junction transistor available in TO-220 package. It is a part of a series which also contains MJE15030. Both of these transistors have their PNP complimentary transistors which are MJE15029 (complimentary of MJE15028) and MJE15031 (complimentary of MJE15030).
These transistors are designed to be used in high frequency drivers in audio amp applications but due to their electrical characteristics, these transistors can also be used in variety of other applications which we will discuss below.
The feature MJE15028 and its series offerS a good transition frequency of upto 30MHz which makes it ideal to be used in fast switching circuits, RF circuits and other high frequency applications. The availability of its complimentary pairs also makes them good candidates to be used in push-pull amplifiers and many other applications that require complimentary pairs.
The high collector-emitter voltage makes them ideas to be used in applications that require high voltage. Moreover, the collector current of 8A makes it suitable to drive variety of different types of loads.
Looking at the absolute maximum ratings of the transistor the collector-emitter voltage is 120V, continuous collector current is 8A and peak collector current is 16A, emitter-base current is 5V, base current is 2A, collector power dissipation is 50W and operating and storage junction temperature is from -65°C to 150°C.
Where We Can Use it & How to Use:
As mentioned MJE15028 and other transistors of the series are designed to be used in high frequency drivers in audio amps but it is not limited to only this application and can also be used in other applications such as motor control, lighting systems, telecommunication, power supplies, converters, inverters etc.
Now to use the transistor as a switching apply signal from which you want to control the output load to the base of the transistor through a suitable resistor. The collector of the transistor should be connected with the negative connection of the load and the positive connection of the load will be connected with the positive rail of the circuit. The emitter will be connected with the negative rail of the circuit.
To use the transistor as an amplifier apply the signal you want to amplify to the base of the transistor through a suitable coupling capacitor and biasing network of two resistors. Now the collector pin of the transistor will be connected with the positive rail of the circuit and the load resistor will be connected between the collector pin and the positive rail. The emitter pin will be connected to the negative rail of the circuit through a resistor with a capacitor that will be used paralleled with that resistor.
Applications:
Audio Amplifiers
DC-DC Converters
Power Supplies
Battery Charger Circuits
Voltage regulators
Lighting Control Circuits
Motor Driver Circuits
Safe Operating Guidelines:
Here are the safe operating guidelines of the transistor.
- Do not use the transistor to its absolute maximum ratings and always stay 20% below from these absolute maximum ratings.
- So to use the transistor 20% below from its absolute maximum ratings so we will make some calculations that if we less the 20% then how much will be left so we will try to stay in that value. So the maximum collector current of the transistor is 8A but according to the 20% rule we will not drive load of more than 6.4A.
- The maximum collector-emitter voltage is 120V so we will not drive load of more than 96V.
- A suitable heatsink should always be used with the transistor.
- Storage and operating temperatures of the transistor should be between -65°C and below 150°C.
