PN2222 Transistor Explained / Description:
PN2222 is a popular transistor NPN bipolar junction transistor (BJT) available in TO-92 package. It is a general purpose transistor and can be used in wide variety of switching and amplification applications. The transistor is packed with quite good specs in its TO-92 package and low cost which makes it a reliable choice for wide variety of commercial and educational uses.
The maximum collector current of the transistor is 600mA, which is quite unique because mostly available TO-92 package transistors have 100mA to 200mA max collector current capability. Looking at the other specs the max collector to emitter voltage is 30V, transition frequency is 250MHz, minimum and maximum DC current gain is 30 to 300 and max collector dissipation is 625 Milliwatt.
As mentioned it can be used for general purpose switching and amplification purposes. When used as a switch it can drive load of up to 600mA which is quite enough to drive wide variety of loads in electronic circuits such as multiple high power LEDs, high current relays, motors, high power transistors etc.
2N2222 VS PN2222
2N2222 (Metal Case) is not the exact match of the PN2222 but can be used interchangeably, and there are also some advantages of using the metal case for example it has high collector current of upto 800mA, higher operating temperature and higher collector to emitter voltage but if your load requirements are less then 600mA then PN2222 can be a good choice.
Where We Can Use it & How to Use:
First of all PN2222 is primarily designed for general purpose uses due to which it can be used for variety of general applications and can also be used as a replacement of other general purpose transistors.
Additionally It can be used to drive any type of load that falls under 600mA. Other than that it can also be used for amplification purposes. Moreover due its higher transition frequency it can also be used in RF circuits. The using procedure of the transistor is same as we use any other BJT transistors.
Applications:
Switching
Audio premamplifiers
Audio amplifiers
FM Radios
FM Senders
Any type of electronic signal amplification
And much more…
Safe Operating Guidelines / Absolute Maximum Ratings:
Follow these safe operating guidelines to properly operate the transistor in your circuits:
- To get better performance do not use the transistor to its absolute maximum ratings and always stay 20% below from its max ratings.
- Max collector current is 600mA therefore do not drive load of more than 480mA.
- Max collector to emitter current should be under 24V.
- Transistor should be operated between -55°C to 150°C.
