TIP145 Transistor Explained / Description:
TIP145 is a PNP transistor available in TO-218 package. It is a darlington transistor which means it contains two transistors inside which are connected in a darlington way (Check the internal diagram of the transistor in above pinout image) that increases the output gain of the transistor to a great extent. Darlington transistors are ideal to use in applications where you want to multiply gain of the signal or also when you want to drive a load with small current. But it should be taken in to consideration that together with the signal it will also increase the noise of the signal.
Looking at the absolute maximum ratings of the transistor the collector current is -10A, collector-base voltage is -60V, collector-emitter voltage is -60V, base current is -0.5A, emitter-base voltage is -5V and collector dissipation is 125W.
Some good features of the transistor are:
Upto -10A of Collector Current Capability:
The transistor is capable of driving load of upto -10A:
-10A current is quite an acceptable collector current and can be used most of the electronic applications.
Reliable to use in industrial applications:
It is a reliable transistor and can be used in commercial and industrial applications without any hassle.
Availability of its Complimentary Pair:
Complimentary pairs of all the transistors in the series are available.
High DC current gain:
The DC current gain of 500 to 1000 makes it ideal to use in applications that require higher gain transistors.
All the above features make this transistor acceptable for use in various general purpose switching and amplifier applications.
How to Use the Transistor:
The procedure of using the darlington transistors the same as BJT transistors. By providing the signal to its base, driving the load through its collector, and connecting the emitter with the positive supply.
NPN Complementary:
NPN Complementary of TIP145 is TIP140.
Replacement and Equivalent:
TIP146, TIP147, BDV64A, BDV64, BDV64B, BDW84C, BDV64C, MJH6287.
Applications:
Audio amplifiers
Motor Drivers
Audio amplifier output stages
Drive load of up to -10A
And many other general purpose applications.
Safe Operating Guidelines / Absolute Maximum Ratings:
Here are some guidelines for safe operation of the transistor.
- Do not use the transistor to its absolute maximum ratings and stay at least 20% below from these ratings.
- The maximum collector current is -10A, but by following the above 20% below using guideline the maximum load should not be more than -8A.
- The maximum collector-emitter voltage is 60V but by following the above guideline we will not use more than 48V.
- Use a suitable heatsink with the transistor.
- The storage and operating temperature range should be between -65°C to 150°C.
