TIP146 Transistor Explained / Description:
TIP146 is an another transistor of the series which contains other transistors such as TIP145 and TIP147. Their complimentary transistors series are TIP140, TIP141 and TIP147. All the transistors of these NPN and PNP series are darlington power transistors that are designed for general purpose switching and amplification purposes.
Now coming back to TIP146 transistor looking at the absolute max ratings of the transistor, the maximum collector-emitter voltage is 80V, max collector current is -10A, max collector-base voltage is also 80V, max emitter-base voltage is 5V, max base current is 0.5V, total device dissipation is -65°C to 150°C.
The transistor possesses many good features such as:
Good DC current gain:
The minimum to maximum DC current gain of the transistor is 500 to 1000 makes it suitable for applications that requires to amplify their DC current gain.
Availability of its Complimentary Pair:
The availability of its complimentary NPN transistor also provides benefits in many applications where both the pair are used for better results such as in audio amplifier circuits.
Collector Current of Upto -10A:
The collector current of up to -10A makes it suitable for many high current applications under this current.
Reliable to use in industrial applications:
It is a very reliable and good quality transistor and can be used in industrial and commercial applications.
All these qualities or features make this transistor robust and reliable device to use in variety of general purpose applications for commercial and educational use.
How to Use This Transistor:
Although the darlington transistor is internally different from a BJT transistor, but the using procedure is the same as BJT by applying signal to its base, connecting emitter with the positive supply, and collecting the output from the collector so in switch circuit the load should be derived through the collector and in amplifier circuit the amplified output will be received from the collector. This is a simple guide of using the transistor to clear your concept, of course, you have to use some passive components when you are building the circuit practically or for any project.
Applications:
Drive load of up to -10A
Audio amplifiers
Audio amplifier output stages
Motor Drivers
And many other general purpose applications.
Safe Operating Guidelines:
Here are some guidelines for safe operation of the transistor.
- For the overall safety of the transistor do not use it to its absolute maximum ratings and always stay 20% below from its max ratings.
- So the maximum collector current is -10A but applying the above 20% rule we will only use -8A.
- The same will be applied to its collector-emitter voltage the max voltage is 80V but we will not drive a load of more than 64V.
- Always use a suitable heatsink with the transistor.
- The storage and operating temperature should be between these values: -65°C to 150°C.
